About Global Development

Where humanitarian aid and disaster relief provide short-term fixes to emergencies, global development seeks to make long-term and sustainable changes to help improve peoples' lives by empowering them with the tools and resources required to help themselves.

As an MGD student you will study six core modules including Critical Issues in Global Development, Equitable Development and Social Change, and Politics and Foreign Relations. You’ll have the option to then undertake individual research, complete an Australian or international internship, or to focus on a program specialisation stream. The specialisation streams include:

  • Disaster Resilience, Conservation and Natural Resource Management
  • Economics, Governance and Social Change
  • Indigenous Futures
  • Public Health
  • Sustainable Development Planning and Policy
  • Development Leadership and Management

What career possibilities are there?

Develop the knowledge and skills to work in priority areas of poverty alleviation, sustainable planning, social justice, climate-responsive systems, sustainable resource management and global health — areas identified by the UN as key global challenges for future sustainability.

From lawyers to entrepreneurs, from scientists to engineers, and from social workers to healthcare professionals; people from all backgrounds are making the transition into global development.

You could help solve some of the world's most complex problems as a researcher, inspire the next generation through teaching, provide aid to those most in need as a disaster recovery specialist, or thrive in the world of business planning. Like our alumni, as an MGD graduate you can excel in your current field or go on to find employment with some of the world's foremost organisations including:
