Nationally accredited degree

Earn a degree that’s nationally accredited through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership in association with the Queensland College of Teachers.

Accelerated part-time learning

Within the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education / Primary Education), focus on one subject at a time with part-time study. Each subject runs for seven weeks, and you can study up to six subjects a year.

Gain credit for prior learning

If you have previously completed formal learning (previous study) or informal/non-formal learning you may be eligible to apply for study credit.

Undergraduate options
Bachelor of Early Childhood Education
Study Early Childhood Education and learn to nurture the development and wellbeing of children from birth to eight years in childcare centres and primary schools. Begin professional experience in your first year and complete 120 placement days across your degree.

RATEP pathway

RATEP is a community-based pathway supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to become registered primary teachers. How? By supporting you in your community while you study. RATEP is a partnership between the Queensland Department of Education, TAFE Queensland North, James Cook University (JCU), and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Gain credit into the RATEP pathway with a Diploma of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education (11214NAT, 10753NAT): 24 Credit points = 8 subjects.


Gain credit with the following qualifications:

  • Certificate IV in School Based Education Support 6 credit points = 2 subjects
  • Diploma of School Age Education and Care 9 credit points = 3 subjects

What career possibilities are there?

JCU Education (Primary) graduates pursue careers in state, Catholic and independent schools across Australia as well as overseas, particularly in the United Kingdom. You will be well-positioned to find employment as a primary school teacher in rural and regional Australia. Graduates will be particularly well-qualified to meet the educational needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
